In 2000, the population of Oakland, Tennessee was 1279. In July of 2006 it had exploded to 3306. Low taxes and an attractive cost of living attributed to this

In June 2007, even though it's smaller than the surrounding cities, Oakland has the highest number of building permits issued for any suburb in the Memphis metropolitan area. This included Southaven and Olive Branch, Mississippi, and Collierville, Tennessee.
